Grade 2 learners will embark on an exciting journey to discover the art of paragraph writing through the delightful Hamburger Method. We'll explore each layer of a paragraph, from the juicy main idea to the supporting details and concluding sentence. To cap off our learning adventure, learners will showcase their newfound skills by creating visually appealing paragraphs using Canva.

Opening Activity
 

In the opening activity, through "Think, Pair, Share," learners will discuss their experiences with making or eating hamburgers. They will focus on identifying the different ingredients that make up a delicious hamburger.

  • Engage students in sharing experiences of making or eating hamburgers through "Think, Pair, Share," fostering communication skills.  

Main Activity

In the main activity, learners will use Canva to visually create paragraphs following the Hamburger Method, integrating the main idea, supporting details, and a concluding sentence for a dynamic blend of writing and creative expression.

  • Engage learners in utilizing Canva to apply the Hamburger Method, fostering the integration of main ideas, supporting details, and concluding sentences.

Closing Activity

Learners will take turns sharing their paragraphs with the class.

  • Enhance comprehension by learning from classmates' interpretations.
  • Build confidence in public speaking and sharing ideas.
     

 

Prior Knowledge
Learners should be able to:

  • Understand the basic sentence structure.
  • Recognize common punctuation marks (periods, capital letters).

Pre-lesson Prep

  • Like all lessons on Eddy, this lesson follows a certain approach. If this is your first time implementing an Eddy lesson, check out our lesson approach for more information.
  • Prepare necessary technology/hardware in advance.
  • Devices (tablets/laptops/Chromebooks/computers) - one per team.
  • A stable wifi connection.
  • Access to Canva draw on each device.

Display the question: "When did you last eat/make a hamburger?” and take their responses.
Facilitate a discussion for students to express experiences and thoughts on hamburgers.
Ask: "What are the ingredients for a delicious hamburger?" and lead an interactive class discussion.


Expected responses may include recent events such as a family barbecue, a visit to a fast-food restaurant, or a homemade meal.
Common ingredients might include buns, patties, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, ketchup, and mustard. Students may also mention unique toppings or preferences.

Discussion Question: How is building a hamburger similar to building a paragraph?

Ask students to turn to a classmate, forming pairs for discussion.
Instruct students to share their thoughts on the discussion question.
Guiding questions include:
What are the steps involved in building a hamburger? How about the steps involved in building a paragraph?
What happens if you leave out the meat/cheese/lettuce in a hamburger? What would be the equivalent in a paragraph?

Emphasize the top bun as the starting sentence, also known as the 'topic sentence' or 'key idea.'
Define the burger layers as the sentences within the paragraph.
Guide them to recognize that most paragraphs include two to three of these supporting sentences.
Introduce the bottom bun as the ending sentence in the paragraph.

Method 1: Explain to the learners that they can use the drawing tool to create any drawings and then write the paragraph.

The methods discussed above are just some of the ways Canva can be used. Learners are free to come up with their own methods or combine different methods.
